What is Potable Aqua
If your hiking, camping, in the military or just need emergency drinking water. You may already be familiar with Potable aqua water purification tablets.
By drop a few pills into the water and allow it to disinfect, you will have palatable H2O. These water pills are designed to make questionable water drinkable by killing off viruses, cysts and bacteria.
You can buy water purifying tablets almost any where. All outdoors supply shops should have it in stock. Another brand that is basically the same is Coleman drinking water purification tablets.
All potable water pills consists of only one or two active ingredients, Chlorine (Sodium Chlorite), Iodine and or Tetraglycine Hydroperiodide (antibacterial). These ingredients can be made separately or injunction depending on the product.
Is it Safe?
We can assume its safe to use Potable Aqua since its made to be consumed. The only issue is the ratio of water to pill. Would there be any risk in taking the tablets with small amounts of water?

To review on this method, what we did was find out what method people that have passed used. This way we would at least get any idea of what should work before we try it.
We have seen review where potable aqua has worked to detox opiates, cocaine as well as marijuana from urine.
So, it may be safe to assume that, if this method works, than potable aqua might work for all drugs. but lets not jump to conclusions yet, lets go over the method and test it first.
There are 2 methods that seem to have worked:
- Dropping the tab in your UA sample
- Drinking water thats treated with a couple of tablets
We will be using both methods, once or twice each. The first test will be with an I-cup or 5 panel dip stick. If the methods that pass will be tested again by the local lab. So lets cross our fingers and see how this goes.
How to use potable aqua to pass a drug test
Like I mentioned above, you can use any brand of purification tablets. Potable Aqua just happens to be the most commonly named.
To be sure, we will also use Coleman’s water tablets as a side by side.
Method #1: Dropping Tablets into UA Sample
- Drop two tablets into the UA sample cup
- Pee in it
- Wait for Tablets to dissolve
- Hand them to the tech
Method #2: Drinking Treated Water
- Drop 2 (iodine) tablets into a 1 liter of water
- Shake periodically till dissolved, wait 30 min
- Water will be discolored and taste like iodine
- Add 2 PA+ tablets (chlorine) to clear look and taste of water
- Wait 20 minutes then drink
- Pee once before giving the sample urine
3rd method has been left out due to of health concerns. Directly ingesting these tablets wouldn’t produce any additional benefit and at the least will upset your stomach
How long does potable aqua keep you clean
According to reports, method #2 might be able to keep you clean for up to 3 days after use. I’m not going to comment on this yet, keep reading. We will go over the results in depth in the results section below.
How many water pills should i take to pass a drug test
This is also a common question, the answer depends on the method you used. For method #1 only 2 tablets are used, one PA+ the other Iodine. Method #2 uses a total of 4 pills, 2 PA+ and 2 iodine pills. We will not go into method #3 here, sorry.
Can you really pass a drug test with potable aqua?
Here is the part we have all been waiting for, will it really help you pass your urine drug test?
First lets look at the results from our home test kit. We had 4 volunteers stop smoking weed for 3 days before the test. The day of, we had them pee into I Cups, then we retested with 5 panel strips. The ones that pass were to get tested again by a lab.
Home Test Results:
- ICup: All four failed
- 5 panel strips: All four failed
Ok,. so that didn’t really work out. The plan was to take the volunteers that had the passing method to the lab for further testing, Problem, as you can see is no one passed. The decision was made to just go ahead and send two of them off to the lab anyway and see what happens.
Lab Test Results:
Method #1: Failed, sample rejected
The tablets would not dissolve quick enough. After waiting a minute the volunteer decided to try crushing the pills with his fingers. By the time the sample was handed over, the temp was low and the urine color was off. The Lab tech didn’t even bother with testing it, failed on the spot.
Method #2: False positive
We thought we had it with this one. The tech took the sample, check the temps and started testing. The initial screening came back with an error, so it was then sent for the GC/MS (Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometry) check.
The next day we were told that the urine sample was no good, diluted or tampered with, aka, false positive. I asked if there was any evidence of drugs found.
The reply was:
“No, no drug metabolites. You can have him resubmit a sample, or take it as is. A “false positive” is usually indicates an attempt was made to mask or cheat the UA or a very unlikely failure equipment or procedure”
This was pretty much a disaster with fails almost completely through.
The only saving grace is that some places may decide to disregard false positives. What exactly does a “false-positives” mean in this situation. Simply put, it means: no metabolites are present and the person or facility that ordered the testing makes the final decision. They decide to take it as a pass, fail or if you should retake the UA, which is an added cost.
We don’t see any advantage with this method over using an off the counter THC detox drink
What do you think, did we leave something out? Have you passed a UA with this method, what do you want us to try? Let us know by joining the discussion, thanks!
