I’ll assume that you already know who Rick Simpson is. That you know all about his amazing work and the miracle oil he has created.
The only problem is that his method call for large amounts of cannabis. As well as a solvent called “Naphtha“, I have never seen in person.
This simple RSO Oil recipe is easy to follow and produces very a potent oil.
How to Make RSO Oil
Please view the video for detailed directions. Since this recipe calls for the use of a solvent, it’s important to take the necessary safety precautions.
- Don’t use and stay clear of flames, fires and sparks
- Work in a very ventilated area
You Will Need:
- At least one ounce of dried marijuana
- Double boiler or 2 sauce pans
- Solvent, in this case EverClear alcohol
- 2 glass jars
- Coffee filters or cheese cloth
- Electric cook top
- Liquid syringes for dosing
- *Coconut oil
Choosing the Best Solvent
There seems to be a fuss about this topic. The type of solvent you use to make ricks oil is not as big of a deal as some may make it.
As long as its 99% pure you should be fine. That means you can use EverClear, isopropyl alcohol or Naphtha.
EverClear 190 proof is readily available at most liquor stores and is considered to be “food grade”. Makes it the perfect solvent for homemade RSO.
Vodka, moonshine, 151 proof and other similar alcohol products is not a substitute. The alcohol you use must be at least 190 proof.
EverClear comes in 151 and 190 proof, make sure to get the right one
What Type of Marijuana to use?
You can make RSO oil from trimmings, buds, kief and even stems. But, the type of plant materials used will be reflect on the quality of the oil.
Using Kief or Hash to make Ricks oil is a different method. Since Hash and Keif consists of mostly trichomes, there is almost no need to filter.
So please research the proper method of making cannabis oil keif and/or hash.
Best Strain of Cannabis to use?
There no is “Best” strain, the strain you use depends on symptoms or condition you are treating.
For example, if you want to make oil thats high in CBD, but low in THC. You would choose the appropriate strain.
In this example, I would pick the Charlotte’s Web strain. Which can has less than .5% THC and CBD levels above 20%.
All Rick recommends is that the cannabis be at least 10% Sativa.
Indica tends to make you sleepy but at 1% Sativa, you can manage to stay awake.
Also, the oil created will be way more potent then the raw cannabis. Consider the oil to be a highly concentrated version of the strain used.
It’s difficult to say how many times stronger the oil is compared to the bud. But let me try to give you an idea, from personal experience.
One dose of RSO will get you higher than smoking one blunt solo. This stuff is very strong, I hope that will give you and idea of how much THC is in a single dose.
Just so you know, a dose is about the size of a grain of rice.
What is the Best Temperature for Making RSO?
I have read articles suggesting the perfect temperature for cooking your oil. Some say if the temps are to high, the cannabinoids will burn off.
While other say if temps are too low, the THC will not go through Decarboxylataion, which is true. But this doesn’t mean you must measure temps at all times.
With the Double Boiler method the right temperature is maintained safely.
I have made RSO on many times, producing excellent and potent oil each time.
Without using a thermometer or even thinking about the cooking temperature once.
Don’t sweat it, follow this recipe and you should do fine.
Tips for Collecting all the Residue
When you make your first batch of oil. You might take notice of the amount of oil that goes to waste. The oil is very stick and hard to totally wipe off of the cooking utensils.
Here are a few tips for higher RSO yields:
Use enough solvent
It is possible for the solvent to become over saturated and leave behind some residual cannabinoids.
By fully covering the raw material in solvent and doing a second and third wash. You will increase your yields and reduce percentage of losses.
Use glass and silicone
- Use glass jars and containers to wash the cannabis
- Cook your RSO on a Pyrex/glass pan
- Use a Silicone spatula to squeegee the oil off of the pan and jars
Reclaim any residue with coconut oil
No matter what you do, there is always seems to be some RSO oil you cant fully recover. Here is a simple tip to help you gather that little bit of oil.
Cannabinoids are fat soluble, this means you can use any fat based products to absorb cannabinoids. Coconut oil can withstand high heat temps.
This make Coconut oil the perfect tool for getting that last bit.
After the oil is made and I have squeegeed as much of the RSO as I could. I add about a table spoon of Coconut butter on to the pan.
Using it to clean off and absorb the left over residue on the pan and spatula. Drain the oil into a small container and store.
Once done, you will have almost totally reclaimed all the oils.
The Side Effects and High
RSO WILL GET YOU HIGH, no matter the strain.
Even with the super low levels of THC in Charlotte’s Web.
Like stated above, RSO is highly concentrated and very potent. It’s important for the user to slowly builds up a tolerance before taking a full dose.
This is really important for any one that doesn’t use marijuana on a regular bases.
If the person taking the oil is new to cannabis, even half a dose will produce some some very unpleasant side effects.
- Throwing up
- Pale skin
- Drop in blood sugar
- Cold sweats
- Passing out
- Blacking out
The side effects of RSO oil can be so dramatic, some stop taking the oil all together. Avoid this be being aware and educating anyone thats interested in using Rick’s oil.
If you are familiar with other Marijuana extracts, you should know what to expect. The preferred way to use RSO is as an additive to food.
Making it comparable to the high you would get from any edible. If you have ever had an edible, you probably understand the risks.
Unlike smoking weed, where you can stop getting higher. Edibles creep in and hit you with a full dose for a prolonged time.
How To Use and Dose RSO
Rick Simpson Oil can be smoked, vaporized, eaten and dabbed. The method of ingestion will alter the effects and can reduce medicinal benefits.
This is the preferred method of ingestion for medicinal use for few reasons. You don’t risk the chance of destroying cannabinoids by burning.
Cannabinoids are slowly digested and metabolized in the stomach. This is a great way to get cannabinoids into your system over a few hour period.
Making it alot easier to dose over a 8 to 12 hour period.
Smoking, Dabbing and Vaping RSO
I grouped these together for a good reason. Anything you smoke will hit you faster, within 5 to 10 minutes versus 30 to 40 minutes with edibles.
This method will also work its way out faster than you want. Smoked Oils will get you high for 1 to 3 hours. The effects of eating RSO can last upto 6 hours.
RSO Oil is thicker than vaping liquid and taste more like the herb than an extract. RSO is too thick for most vaporizers and will not work well in a vape pen.
If you are planing to vape it, you will need to dilute RSO and make to thin it out. The use Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin to thin out the cannabis oil is common.
Dabbing Rick Simpson oil is the same as any extract. The usually wax, shatter, BHO and dab oils will not have the same flavor as RSO.
Expect a powerful herbal flavor that will make it easy to identify the strain used.
Dosing Rick Simpson’s Cannabis Oil
The preferred method of ingestion is orally, so we wont get into inhaled dosing.
Vaping, dabbing and smoking is better for the pain killing effect and reduces the medicinal benefits of RSO.
Although it may not seem like much, one full dose is very potent and not suggested at first.
It’s important to dived one dose into 3 parts to slowly develop a tolerance.
The goal is to work up to taking one full dose 3 times a day. Building tolerance can take 1 to 2 weeks depending on the individual.
At first its recommended to spread out on dose of RSO through out an 8 to 12 hour period.
- Squeeze out a bead of RSO that is about the same size of a grain of rice.
- Try to split that dose into 3 parts
- 1st dose is taken when you wake in the morning with breakfast
- 2nd portion taken with lunch
- The 3rd (last) with dinner or at the end of the day
- Continue until you feel comfortable with a full dose
Once you are capable of taking a full dose at once, you can start a regular dosing schedule.
This would be a full bead of RSO the size of a grain of rice, 3 times a day, with food.
At this dose its important to avoid taking RSO on an empty stomach.
You can continue this dosing schedule for as long as necessary. Taking larger then suggested doses may not produce any additional benefits.
Want to Buy RSO?
Ricks oil has become very popular due to the amazing health benefits. There is a huge demand for purchasing ready made oil.
Con-artist have seized the opportunity to make money selling fake cannabis oil. This is why Rick recommends making your own oil.
- Don’t buy RSO online
- Only trust recommended vender’s for quality oil
- Ask for RSO specifically
- Just make your own!
Rick Simpson’s RSO Oil versus THC Oil, CBD Oil and Other Extracts
RSO oil is a totally different from other extracts, oils and BHO. It is not an extract and the THC/CBD ratio depends on the strain.
Imagine Ricks oil as a complete concentration of the cannabis plant. You are getting a concentration of all the cannabinoids, chlorophyll, anti-oxidants and antibacterials, contained in Cannabis plant.
Other extracts and oils are processed differently, intern not the same as RSO oil. For medicinal purposes there is no substitute.
The Current Going Rate
You can find RSO for sale all over the Internet. The prices can vary depending on amount, quality purchased (bulk) and region.
The average price per 1000mg of RSO is about $50 USD. If you are quoted a price thats much higher or lower, there may be a problem.
Will you test positive for drugs if you use RSO?
Unfortunately, if you use ricks oil you will not pass a drug test.
If you legally use Rick Simpson Oil for medical reasons, keeping a detoxify drink handy can help protect your privacy.
