No matter how much you search or how many people you ask. You are guaranteed to get nothing but conflicting reports on this. But, if your planning on subbing with real pee, you will need to know the truth!
Can Labs Tell the Difference Between Male and Female Urine During a Drug Test?
If you have a UA coming up ant are not completely sure you’ll pass. Chances are you probably thought about subbing. Subbing is short for substituting and it can come in many forms.
For example you can sub by:
- Using synthetic urine
- Using someone elses pee
- Using a “DIY” sub
By far one of the most reliable subs is real fresh urine, but thats only if done right. The hardest part of subbing is not where to get the pee, but how to use it.
So if you plan on using substitute urine, make sure your doing it right first!
Why the Do or Don’t Check Gender
Yes it is possible and labs do run checks on samples for gender. But the question here is where, when and under what situations.
It all depends on what agency prescribed the screening and what state your in.
Most employers will by pass the optional gender tests to save on costs. Other employers might opt into this due to security or chances of cheating.
In some states (Mississippi), the use of synthetic urine has become an issue. Such an issue in fact that drug testing labs have to change procedures annually.
But. overall if your going to be screened by an employer chances are they won’t check!
Court Ordered UA
Now we are stepping into the gray area. Two reasons:
- Liability: Just don’t try to fraud them, its kind of a big deal
- Reason: Why were they ordered and are you a risk
Hope that answers your question on that. Just don’t mess with the law, the risk to reward ratio is not good. Chances are if your in trouble with the law, you shouldn’t be smoking weed anyway.
Immunoassay Vs. GC/MS Vs. RIA
Just like anything else you spend money on, theres an “Upgrade”. Labs will not provide the gender information without getting paid for it.
Immunoassay
A basic Immunoassay without GC/MS cant even tell if it cup of pee or a cup of apple juice. These are the ultra basic 99¢ tests. How can you tell if its one of these? Easy, if your peeing on a stick, chances are it is.
Immunoassay with GC/MS
Even thought these types of test can tell the difference, you got ot pay for those results. At this point it all depends on why your being tested. If its for a job, chances are they didn’t pay for that “Upgrade”.
RIA
This is the upgrade! RIA test specifically call for the sex of the donor. If you know the test will be a “Radio Immunoassay” screening. They are definitely checking for sex and synthetics!
Subbing with Girlfriends Urine
So, this is the most common question. Being a dude myself, I’m not going to say its because more guys smoke weed then girls do, although thats actually true, for now.
It doesn’t really matter, the percentage of girls smoking weed is raising quicker then men. I think the real reason this is true is because woman are able to practice more constraint to pot use. (Read the PDF)
Using your Boyfriends or Brother Pee
Same goes for the ladies, even though cheating might be a little easier with male urine. If there is a chance that they might test for gender, the best bet is not to sub with your boy friends urine, or little brothers for that matter.
If Your Worried
So your certain that the lab will check for synthetics and gender. This is rare, but still possible. The best bet is not to use a synthetic and defiantly don’t use your girlfriends/boyfriends piss.
It doesn’t matter if shes on birth control or going through a cycle. It doesn’t matter, drug tests that check for gender will always be able to detect it.

Seriously, everything about this is absolutely, stupidly wrong.
1) No one except specialists like endocrinologists are checking for hormone levels in urine. These are very specific and expensive tests.
2) Even if they did screen for hormones, this means NOTHING. It’s entirely possible that a man might have higher than normal estrogen levels and low testosterone levels; vice versa for a woman.
3) Even if you could definitively tell gender from urine (you can’t), there’s always the possibility that the person has a hormonal imbalance or is transgendered, which is no one’s business. That would be an invasion of privacy which is HIPPA protected, making gender-snooping illegal.
4) Even pregnancy tests are NOT an exception to this. NO ONE is testing for pregnancy on drug screens, but even if they were, testicular cancer will cause a positive on an HcG (pregnancy) test. Again, this is personal, protected information, illegal to obtain without specific consent.
Let’s put this bullshit to bed once and for all; for drug screens urine is urine, regardless of gender.

Excellent review of the above befoolery!

So my question is about pain management drug testing. They are testing both to make sure the drug they prescribe me is present, but also that nothing else is. Since I also use marajuana to control my pain. (Much more effectively) funding clean urine that also has the pain med I take in it is challenging! I’m only worried bc occasionally they do pregnancy tests. If I use male urine and they also test it for pregnancy, will it only show as a negative result? And I’m all good to go?
