Remember when people used to say putting bleach in urine makes it clean? Some, still swear it still works. But, when you ask them if they have personally tried it, the answers usually, no.
It’s usually a friend or a friends, friend that supposedly passed that way. Now, I don’t doubt it, but theres a problem. What type of test was it? At home, a lab, per-employment, etc,..
To get to the bottom of this, we decided to conduct a few tests and find out the truth.
Does Putting Bleach in Drug Test Work?
There seems to be three common methods of adulterating urine with bleach. Two of them might work, the third can potentially kill you. Because we value our lives and couldn’t find anyone dumb enough to drink bleach, we decided to skip that one.
- Add bleach directly to sample
- Dipping finger in bleach then urine
- Death by drinking bleach
Before even getting started, we decided to look into the scientific of this theory. What if any sense does this make and if theres any real evidence to back it up.
Before we even get into this, its important to know the difference between THC, THCa and THC-COOH.
No matter the screening, hair, saliva, blood or urine. The compound thats used to detect cannabis use is THC-COOH, the metabolite of THC.
This metabolite is produced by the liver once Marijuana is used and absorbed into your body.
THC-COOH Oxidizing Adulterant
I’m all about the Bro Science and would rather trust the word of a friend over some stranger in a lab coat. But when it comes to flushing out THC, I’d like to see some evidence.
So, after some digging around I found a research document that actually states, Oxidants can make THC undetectable!
Wow, so there really maybe some truth to this. Bleach, a powerful oxidizer breaks down THC to CBN making it undetectable.
Now, we have some real scientific study proving that this might work, time to test it out.
Hit the Breaks
Just as I started to get my hopes up. We began to start seeing all types of holes in this theory. Each one of them made it worse then before, we now know why this method never really made it through the test of time.
Urinalyses tests done by labs would detect adulteration right off the bat. But, you may still be able to use this method for simple home tests.
Why it Wont Work
According to whats in the study, it can take some time for THC to oxidize after adding bleach. It depends on the amount of THC in the sample and the amount of bleach you add.
You would have to add bleach to your sample 48 hours before a lab test. Thats not going to happen, labs conduct the initial screening before you even have the chance to leave the room.
Lets pretend that some how, miraculously the sample makes it through the first screening and goes on to the GC-MS (gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric).
- Bleach has a pH level of 12.6
- Human Urine pH is around 7
Now, there are health and diet factor that cause urine pH to fluctuate. The labs know this so they set an acceptable pH range. Anything out of this range is obviously adulterated.
Quest Diagnostics branded their adulterant check as “TestSure“. Setting their acceptable pH range at 4.5 to 9. Other labs may have branded their method differently, but the pH range is all about the same.
I’ll keep this short and sweet.
- Lab Tests: Adding bleach to a urine drug test will cause a false positive, a.k.a, you fail
- Dip Sticks and iCups: You will fail, it takes to long for bleach to clear THC form urine – fail
The best bet for beating any drug tests still remains to be using a Marijuana flush.
